Kerry Hammock

Director

I strongly believe that a college education is more than earning a degree as a result of classes taken. When I started college I had a wonderful advisor who helped me set a plan for a total educational experience.

Of course, we talked about majors and classes, but beyond that, we discussed what I wanted life to be like. I now see the attainment of a degree as important, but only a part of a student’s preparation for the future.

When you meet with me, be prepared to have fun as you explore who you are and where you are going!

Amy Soto

Associate Director

I am sensitive to the time and effort that is required to seek out a life path because, as an undergraduate student, I spent years struggling to pinpoint what I wanted to do. I remember as a Freshmen liking majors that were scattered throughout different colleges - Education, Business, Humanities, Social Science, and Fine Arts & Communications. These options were both exciting and intimidating. Making decisions was challenging for me because committing to a choice felt so final - both liberating and limiting.

I want to meet you where you are. Whether you love 100 majors or are not even sure where to start, that’s fine with me! If you meet with me, I will strive to guide you in a holistic way as we co-explore what matters most to you and how to translate those ideas into actionable next steps. I’ve learned that choosing a career is more flexible and dynamic than I once thought, there is more to college than just a major, and that you can use exploration activities to make the most of your BYU experience while crafting a meaningful future for yourself! I’m here to support you along your path.

Keith Proctor

Associate Director

I have a passion for helping students set and accomplish goals, especially when I get to help them work through their learning failures and setbacks. I believe that with enough time and sustained interest people can learn anything.

When working with students, I like to first explore possible futures after graduation and then work backwards to set goals leading to those futures. I believe that students need to be willing to learn about themselves, to reflect on and learn from their experiences, and become familiar with the opportunities and requirements of the world of work.

Students are decision-makers and I see my role as a support to students.

Alberto Puertas

Academic and Career Advisor

My academic narrative began with dreams and fears. Nevertheless, I remember with fondness my college years. The questions were many: What do I want out of my life? What majors will support my objectives? How to choose? When to choose? What to choose? Why choose that? You may be confronting these daunting questions nowadays as well.

I am a strong believer that understanding what one wants out of life will point a student in the right direction when it comes to academic and career decision-making.

Constructing a student’s personal story shoulder to shoulder when choosing a learning discipline is my focus.

Hi! I’m excited to help you on your exploration journey.

A little about me: I grew up in Florida and Arizona before settling in Utah. In the summertime I describe myself as a “winter person” and in the wintertime, I describe myself as a “summer person”. When it comes down to it, I just wish it was fall all year round! I have a bachelor’s and master’s degree from BYU and a graduate certificate in Academic Advising from Kansas State University.

BYU is an important part of my life and I feel privileged to work with BYU students and see them grow to realize their tremendous potential.

Hayley Jensen

Academic and Career Advisor

Picking a major or career can be intimidating but it doesn’t have to be miserable.

I explored everywhere > creative writing > human resources > psychology > journalism.

A wise advisor reshaped my vision when he taught me that the kind of person I was becoming during my college years was more important than just the skills I learned to do.

My advisors made me feel normal for having questions and accompanied me as I explored. They cared about my life outside of school and asked interesting questions that helped me decide what mattered to me. I hope to do the same for you.

Please talk to me about mountain biking, books, Thai food and your favorite places in Europe.

Lisa Parkinson

Academic and Career Advisor

I am the tallest, full-Japanese, Spanish-speaking woman you may ever meet!

I love the gospel, people, learning, and my family. I am a fierce defender of the “underdogs” in life and if I can do anything to try to make someone’s life or experience at BYU better, I will do my best to do so.

I am a life-long learner who loves to have new experiences, read new books, talk to people different than me, and use all my senses to try new things. I am fascinated with this world and the people in it and feel like a university is the best place for me to be for a profession. Please come on in and visit with me! I cannot wait to meet you!

My major to my career path is nonlinear and includes taking advantage of opportunities that were both planned and not planned. For example:

First major: Early Childhood Education >> Marriage and Family>>Owner and Operator of a textile business (18 years)>>Back to school>>New major: Human Development and Family Studies>>Part-time work at BYU SLC>>Supervisor of Testing Center at BYU SLC>>MPA>>Full-time Academic and Career Advisor and Career Exploration Instructor.
