What is Academic Advising?


Our Academic Advisors assist you in processing, clarifying, and evaluating goals and plans. They help you to examine your personal, educational, and career goals, and to understand how your experiences prepare you for the future.

Academic advising requires action from both you and your advisor. Your academic advisors work to help you navigate BYU and make the most of your time here. Use this page to better understand what our advisors can help you with and how to prepare for your appointment.

Advisor Roles

  • Work with you to design both general and specific development plans to help you achieve your goals
  • Support and encourage you throughout your development at BYU
  • Engage you in exploration activities that align with your development goals
  • Review your academic experiences and help you identify improvements
  • Evaluate your schedule for difficult course combinations, course timing, and balance
  • Encourage you to own your decisions about educational plans and life goals
  • Identify realistic timeframes to complete your educational and life goals
  • Raise your awareness of institutional and community resources and services and make referrals as needed
  • Work to ensure you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts and concerns
  • Keep your records and other sensitive information you discuss in advising sessions confidential

Major Exploration


1. Make a list of what interests you. What are your hobbies?
2. What do you enjoy learning about?
3. Make a list of what you are good at. What subjects, talents, and skills do you excel at?
4. Review the majors that BYU offers, taking note of majors and courses that sound interesting.

Course Scheduling


1. Learn how to register for classes.
2. Make a list of courses you’d like to possibly take.
3. Decide how many credits you need to register for.
4. Questions to ask your advisor:

Academic Improvement Plan (AIP)


1. Thoughtfully fill out the AIP questionnaire online giving yourself plenty of time for reflection.
