Hi! I’m Nicole, an international student from Puno, Peru. I’m studying Psychology and hope to attend medical school. As a transfer student, I jumped into exploring my options at BYU. While I believed God has something better prepared for me than I could ever imagine, I realized it was up to me to seek out additional information and campus resources to make an informed decision. This type of exploration continues to open pathways I would have never considered. I’d love to share what I’ve learned about exploring and hear your story!

Growing up I felt like everybody seemed to know what they wanted to do. I felt kind of alone as I struggled to figure out my path in life and what I wanted to do. As I started to do self-exploration and researched different career paths, I found my passion for psychology. I got to combine my love for people with my love of learning, and it felt like the perfect fit for me!

I came to college thinking I had it all figured out: I'd found my major and thought I knew the career path I wanted. But the more I learned, the more unsure I became. Every new subject, experience, and conversation opened new possibilities. Through exploration, study abroad, and guidance from advisors, I’ve learned that uncertainty isn’t failure, it’s part of the process to success. Now, I have a major I love and I’m still exploring career paths, but BYU’s resources have helped me feel confident moving forward.

My whole life, I told everyone I wanted to be a doctor, mainly because my dad was a doctor. As a kid, I would put on my dad’s scrubs to dress up as a doctor for Halloween. Whenever I received the classic question “So, what do you want to be when you grow up?”, I always responded with “Something in the medical field… I think, honestly, I’m not sure.” I knew I wanted to help people in some way but didn’t know how. Seeing all my career options made me feel overwhelmed and confused. It took a lot to finally decide to study exercise science and pursue graduate school.

I went through my freshman year of college feeling lost, not finding any interest in the majors that BYU had to offer. At first, I wanted to work with animals but didn’t see a clear path to that, so I scrapped the idea, unaware of resources that could get me there. As a volunteer missionary serving in Brazil, I discovered my love for talking with and supporting people. I wanted that to be a large aspect in my future career. Returning to BYU, as I took a Career Exploration class, I found resources and major options. After some exploration I am now interested in pursuing admission to the experience design and management program. Seeing how many opportunities are out there for students, I look forward to helping others discover them as well.
