Hi! I’m Nicole, an international student from Puno, Peru. I’m studying Psychology and hope to attend medical school. As a transfer student, I jumped into exploring my options at BYU. While I believed God has something better prepared for me than I could ever imagine, I realized it was up to me to seek out additional information and campus resources to make an informed decision. This type of exploration continues to open pathways I would have never considered. I’d love to share what I’ve learned about exploring and hear your story!

For a long time, I felt unsure about what career or major was right for me. Eventually, I realized I hadn’t taken the time to truly understand myself—my strengths, values, and goals. Once I began that process of self-exploration, things slowly started to become clearer. I stopped searching for the “perfect” major and instead looked for one that aligned with who I am and what I wanted my future to look like.

Growing up I felt like everybody seemed to know what they wanted to do. I felt kind of alone as I struggled to figure out my path in life and what I wanted to do. As I started to do self-exploration and researched different career paths, I found my passion for psychology. I got to combine my love for people with my love of learning, and it felt like the perfect fit for me!

I came to college thinking I had it all figured out: I'd found my major and thought I knew the career path I wanted. But the more I learned, the more unsure I became. Every new subject, experience, and conversation opened new possibilities. Through exploration, study abroad, and guidance from advisors, I’ve learned that uncertainty isn’t failure, it’s part of the process to success. Now, I have a major I love and I’m still exploring career paths, but BYU’s resources have helped me feel confident moving forward.

My whole life, I told everyone I wanted to be a doctor, mainly because my dad was a doctor. As a kid, I would put on my dad’s scrubs to dress up as a doctor for Halloween. Whenever I received the classic question “So, what do you want to be when you grow up?”, I always responded with “Something in the medical field… I think, honestly, I’m not sure.” I knew I wanted to help people in some way but didn’t know how. Seeing all my career options made me feel overwhelmed and confused. It took a lot to finally decide to study exercise science and pursue graduate school.

I used to feel a lot of anxiety about not having a “set plan” for my major and career. Through participating in exploration activities on campus like taking the Strong Interest Inventory assessment, I was guided to new paths, which unlocked new possibilities for my future. I am currently pursuing a degree in advertising. While I don't know every detail yet, I'm confident that I'm now making the most of my college experience and building a path that's right for me.
