Devery Peck

I have always loved people and knew that I wanted to work with people. What I didn’t realize until I got to BYU is that almost every profession works with people, and I quickly got overwhelmed by my options. Each week when someone would ask me what I was studying, I would tell them my current plan that I was confident in and then entirely switch that plan the next week to something completely different. It wasn’t until I seriously started to explore majors and careers that I was able to narrow down my options to something that was a good fit for me! Now, I am majoring in human development and am excited to keep learning about how to work with specific groups of people and one day have a career in social work!

Jared Rodriguez

Hometown:
Tegucigalpa, Honduras 

For as long as I can remember, I wanted to become a doctor like my father. His dedication to caring for others inspired me. After starting medical school in Honduras and serving a volunteer mission for my church, I felt prompted to study abroad. Coming to the U.S. as an international student opened my eyes to new possibilities. Exploring those paths was overwhelming, but ultimately led me to study psychology, a career that allows me to pursue my dream of caring for others and helping them become who they are meant to be.

Kyle Knapp

Hometown:
Eugene, OR

My whole life, I told everyone I wanted to be a doctor, mainly because my dad was a doctor. As a kid, I would put on my dad’s scrubs to dress up as a doctor for Halloween. Whenever I received the classic question “So, what do you want to be when you grow up?”, I always responded with “Something in the medical field… I think, honestly, I’m not sure.” I knew I wanted to help people in some way but didn’t know how. Seeing all my career options made me feel overwhelmed and confused. It took a lot to finally decide to study exercise science and pursue graduate school.

Lauren Boyd

Franklin, TN

For as long as I can remember, I loved the idea of going to school and building a career. However, I often felt out of place compared to everyone else because my interests and hobbies never seemed to point me in one obvious direction. I loved learning new things and participating in different extracurricular activities, but I never felt like I had one standout strength or interest. As I grew older and began working in various part-time jobs, I started to understand more about myself as an employee. I quickly realized I thrive in environments where I can take charge and owning my own business was something I wanted to work toward in the future.

Lucy Olson

Hometown:
Orem, UT

I went through my freshman year of college feeling lost, not finding any interest in the majors that BYU had to offer. At first, I wanted to work with animals but didn’t see a clear path to that, so I scrapped the idea, unaware of resources that could get me there. As a volunteer missionary serving in Brazil, I discovered my love for talking with and supporting people. I wanted that to be a large aspect in my future career. Returning to BYU, as I took a Career Exploration class, I found resources and major options. After some exploration, I'm now interested in pursuing admission to the experience design and management program. Seeing how many opportunities are out there for students, I look forward to helping others discover them as well.

Nicole Barrus

Hometown:
Boxborough, MA

As someone who did not settle on a major until their junior year, I know what it’s like to wonder if you will ever belong at BYU. It wasn’t until I decided to explore a different major than the one I had originally declared that I realized you can really feel at home here. I am still exploring career options, but my exploration journey thus far has taught me three things: you will find your path, it will not look like anyone else’s, and that is a good thing.
