Jeff Buell

Academic and Career Advisor

What was your major exploration path?

My undergraduate major was in Social Work. I changed my mind multiple times and originally started thinking about Radiology, then switched to Physical Therapy, and then to be a Chiropractor. I finally landed with an Associates in Psychology from Ricks College. After transferring to BYU I switched again to Social Work.

What jobs and careers have you had since college?

Upon graduating from BYU with a Bachelors in Social Work I entered a MSW (Masters of Social Work) program at BYU. When I graduated with my MSW degree I then moved to Yuba City California and worked as a School Social Worker for 3 years. My wife and I then moved back to Utah and I worked as an Academic & Career Advisor at UVU. I was at UVU briefly and then accepted a position to be an Academic & Career Advisor at BYU and have been here ever since. While at BYU I also worked part-time at LDS Family Services as a Therapeutic Clinician and worked towards my LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker). I stayed with LDS Family Services for over 10 years and recently started my own Private Practice.

What are your areas of specialty when it comes to advising?

I feel privileged to help students regarding advising, enhancing their study skills, choosing a major and helping each individual become empowered in the process of choosing a major/career. My professional interests include: student development, undecided students, and career development. I am a first-generation college student and I was in the top 10 of my graduating class (there were only 7 of us though)

What are some of your hobbies and interests?

hiking, fishing, camping, collecting antiques, and building/repairing.

Are you involved with any groups or organizations on campus?

I am the coordinator for the Major Fair which we host in October of Fall Semester.
