I used to feel a lot of anxiety about not having a “set plan” for my major and career. Through participating in exploration activities on campus like taking the Strong Interest Inventory assessment, I was guided to new paths, which unlocked new possibilities for my future. I am currently pursuing a degree in advertising. While I don't know every detail yet, I'm confident that I'm now making the most of my college experience and building a path that's right for me.
Exploration Experience: When I started at BYU, I was convinced I was going to do accounting. I took some of the prerequisites like Accounting 200. But it never felt like the “right major”. I left to serve a volunteer mission for my church and had some missionary companions who talked to me about dentistry, and it seemed like an appealing career.
After returning from serving my mission, I was planning on taking some of the prerequisites for dentistry, but I didn’t feel it was a good fit anymore. I took the Student Development 117 class, which allowed me to learn more about the different opportunities at BYU. After taking a tour of the BYU AdLab, a student advertising agency, I immediately knew this was where I wanted to be. In high school I always had a passion for video making, and through the advertising program, I felt I could make money while doing something I love.
I learned that even though I didn’t know where I was supposed to start, through trial and error, I found fulfillment in my life.
Why is Exploring Important to Me? When I think of exploring, I think of adventure and curiosity. I feel like life is an adventure and we never know what is going to happen next. As I explore, I have learned about who I am and the person I want to be. As I have learned more about possible majors and careers, I have learned how I can give back. Through curiosity and trial and error, I have found hobbies and interests I enjoy and continue to pursue.
Looking Back: Looking back, I wish I had known about the resources BYU offers. From first-hand experience, I know that the faculty want you to have a successful BYU education. Even though it may be scary to talk to a professor or advisor or peer mentor, by taking advantage of these opportunities, you are preparing yourself for a greater chance of a bright and happy future.
