For a long time, I felt unsure about what career or major was right for me. Eventually, I realized I hadn’t taken the time to truly understand myself—my strengths, values, and goals. Once I began that process of self-exploration, things slowly started to become clearer. I stopped searching for the “perfect” major and instead looked for one that aligned with who I am and what I wanted my future to look like.
Exploration Experience: When I was younger, I never really felt like there was a future career that stood out to me, so I decided to serve a volunteer mission for my church and figure out a career after. When I got home, I took a career exploration class (STDEV 117) and realized that I really didn’t know who I was. I had never thought about what my strengths were, what I valued in life, and what I wanted my future to look like. That class gave me a lot of tools to start my exploration process. When I started exploring, I was drawn to a lot of majors in the Marriott School of Business. Instead of taking the time to research the majors in depth, I just started taking intro classes for each major. As I did this, it felt like all I was doing was crossing options off my list instead of finding new options or getting closer to a decision. It felt like at the end of every semester I would tell people about a new major I wanted to go into. I bounced from supply chain to computer science to economics to name a few, but as I looked more into those and started taking classes in those majors, I quickly realized they weren’t for me. I took a step back and spent more time looking into myself and how my strengths, values, and goals could apply to certain majors that I was still interested in, which led me to accounting. As I took the ACC 310 class, I started to really like accounting and saw that a future career in it could align with my skills and what I wanted my life to look like. I was accepted into the accounting program and started the Accounting Junior Core in the fall of 2025! In the end, I am glad I took the time to get to know myself because I am confident in who I am and what I am good at, so I can apply those skills to wherever I end up in life. However, I know that life can change, so I am just excited to keep exploring along the way!
Why is Exploring Important to Me? Exploring is important to me because it helps me feel more confident in the decisions I’m making about my future. I’ve realized that if I take the time to look at all my options, I can choose a path that best fits me. Learning about my own strengths, skills, and what I care about has given me direction and helped me move forward with more confidence, knowing that my choices reflect who I really am.
Looking Back: Looking back, I wish I had taken the time sooner to seriously sit down and think about what I wanted my life to look like. Not what I thought my parents wanted me to do, or what my friends were doing, but what I wanted. After all, the only person who gets to live my life is me, so it is important to chase the dreams that are going to make me happy. I have now done this many times, but I think if I had done it earlier, I would have been able to find direction sooner.
